How to style vintage Styling Advice How to style vintage Styling Advice how to style vintage

Don’t expect your clothes to run the same size when shopping for vintage.

Vintage sizing is almost ALWAYS different from current sizing. I mean, lets not pretend like retailers actually size anything correctly anyway, but still. Often, in vintage I can wear size 10 bottoms. I’m currently a size 6. This is why I recommend looking at or asking for measurements when shopping for vintage online. If you’re looking for vintage in a shop, look through all of the racks. Seriously.

Pair with something modern to stay looking fresh.

Take this look for example. I paired a 70s vintage duster with 80s trousers and a band tee. When you’re trying to figure out how to style vintage items, the solution is always a combination of modern pieces and vintage items. Especially if you have issues with vintage sizing.

Don’t be afraid to look weird.

Sometimes, the best vintage looks are the weird looks. I’m gonna give a shout out to Abby of Clothes and Pizza here- she manages to style the WEIRDEST and also COOLEST looks I’ve ever seen. She’s a vintage styling wizard.

So pair weird patterns and shoulder pads- your excuse is that you love vintage. Likely, someone is bound to be impressed with your sense of style anyway.

Roll, tuck, and pin.

Chances are, you’re not going to find a skinny pant in your local vintage shop. Something that doesn’t look great on the hanger or even on your body can be improved easily. Roll your pants, tuck that ugly button down, and pin your skirts. You’d be surprised at how much more you like your outfit once you do these things!

Experimenting is your friend.

Go thrifting and grab a full cart of clothes. Even if you only slightly like them, grab ’em. Pile up a nice collection of pieces and wear something basic (a fitted black long sleeve top and nice jeans) so you can try difference pieces on with your clothes. This will help you get a good idea on how to style vintage pieces without having to purchase first.

You can shop these pieces and similar ones over at Longlines Vintage.
